Get your candles ready, Blessed Sacrament family! Candlemas (Mass of Candles), the ancient tradition of blessing the candles, will take place at all Masses the weekend of February 1st and 2nd. The Blessing of Throats, in honor of the Feast of St. Blaise, bishop and martyr, will also take place at each Mass.
Candlemas (February 2nd), which is also known as the time after the Purification of the Blessed Virgin Mary, marks the Presentation of the Infant Jesus (the light of the world) in the temple. In this ancient tradition, all of the church candles that will be used during the liturgies for the year will be blessed during the Mass. Please note that this year, Candlemas will not be a separate evening Mass. Instead, it will take place during our usual weekend Masses. That said, the blessing of the liturgical candles will take place at the 8 am Mass on Sunday, Feb. 2nd. This Mass will be live-streamed to our YouTube channel.
The blessing of candles for our parishioners will take place at all Masses on Saturday and Sunday. All are invited to bring candles to be blessed during these Masses. Kindly place them in a basket or container with your name in it and set them on the steps by the Our Lady of Guadalupe statue before Mass begins. Come join us and be a part of this ancient tradition of blessing candles for your home, your domestic church. See you then!
